Stakeholders urge Bauchi govt.to scale up public investment in Agriculture

Bauchi State Stakeholders in Agriculture has urged the Bauchi state government and the state house of assembly to scale up public investment in Agriculture to increase food production.

This is contained in a 15-point communique read by Mrs Tabawa Atiku, the Chairperson Bauchi Budget Committee group at the end of one day public financing for Agriculture budget committee Advocacy summit on Wednesday in Bauchi.

The Communique observed a marginal increase in Agricultural budget allocations in the state between 2015 to 2021, stressing that the allocations still fell below the Maputo / Malabo declaration benchmark.

“We call on the Bauchi state executives and state house assembly to scale up public investment in Agriculture.

“To ensure timely consideration, passage ,and total budget releases as a strategic approach to increase food production, reduce hunger , poverty and achieve the Maputo/ Malabo commitment,” it said.

It stressed that public investment in Agriculture should be scaled up in the specific areas of extension services, access to credit , women in Agriculture , people with disabilities, youth Agriculture.

“Appropriate labor saving technologies , inputs ,post harvest losses reduction supports , processing facilities, storage facilities, training Market access.

“Climate resilient , sustainable Agriculture, Agroecology, research and development , monitoring and evaluation as well as coordination,” the Communique said.

The Communique stressed the need to bring smallholder women farmers to the front of the budget planning discussion at the state and local government level.

It added that women need to be brought side by side with their male counterparts in the discussion and planning of the Agricultural budget and its implementation.

The Communique also pointed out that in the light of late budget releases Ministries, Agencies and departments need to itemise their priorities and proper timeline that synchronises with farmers and farm season.
