Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has urge for calm and restraint amidst violent protests in Zamfara State.
The protests, which began peacefully on August 1, 2024, have degenerated into violence, resulting in injuries, loss of lives, and destruction of property.
The CNG in a statement read by the Zamfara State Coordinator, Hassan Hussain on Tuesday at NUJ Secretariat in Gusau, lamented that, In the last three days, what began as a peaceful protest in northern states has tragically degenerated into violence, particularly in Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa states, among others.
“Public and private properties were destroyed; shops and stores were looted; hundreds of protesters and security personnel sustained various injuries; and many people have lost their lives.”
The CNG said, it recognizes the constitutional right to peaceful protest, as enshrined in Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). However, the group condemns the infiltration of criminal elements and foreign agents, which has escalated tensions and threatened the fragile peace in the state.
In Zamfara State, according to the group, “the protests were initially peaceful, with young men and women marching through the state capital, escorted by security agents. However, on Monday, August 5, 2024, the protests took a violent turn, with criminal elements hijacking the demonstrations and triggering chaos.”
The CNG appeals to all parties to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement to address grievances.
The group also calls on stakeholders to exhibit patriotism and protect Nigeria’s sovereignty, warning against foreign interference in domestic affairs adding that the CNG has noticed that some protesters were flying foreign flags and chanting anti-democratic songs, which threatens the legitimacy of Nigeria’s governance structures.
The emphasizes the need for unity, patriotism, and respect for the rule of law, urging the public to remain calm and support efforts to restore order.
“Our collective response to this situation will determine not only the immediate resolution but also the long-term stability and unity of our dear state.”
“In the last ten years, Zamfara has faced numerous challenges, and the collective effort to rebuild and maintain peace is our collective responsibility. It is imperative that we do not let this violent protest undermine our collective desire for peace and security.”
The group believes that engaging in violence will only deepen divisions and delay progress, and instead, calls for constructive dialogue and collaborative solutions that honor the principles of democracy and human dignity.
